The Game

Australian Football, also known as Aussie Rules or footy, is played between two teams of 18 players each on an oval-shaped field (although the number is normally a bit lower here in Germany). The primary objective is to score points by kicking an oval-shaped ball through the opposing team’s goalposts. The game features high-flying marks, powerful kicks, and robust tackles, making it a thrilling spectacle for players and spectators alike.

The Setup

The field is marked with goalposts at each end, and players move the ball either by running with it or using a combination of handpasses and kicks. The oval ball adds an unpredictable element to the game, requiring players to showcase their skills in ball control and precision.

The Rules

While the game may seem complex at first, the basic rules include advancing the ball by either kicking or handballing, scoring goals by kicking through the goalposts (worth six points), and making behinds (worth one point). Behinds are awarded in the following situations: a) The ball is touched by anything else but the kicker’s legs before crossing the goalline, b) The ball passes between a goal post and a behind post at any height, or c) If the ball hits a goal post. They say it’s the only sport that gives you a point for missing!
